How Our Gut Affects Our Wellness | Health & Wellnes
Studies have shown, there is a link between what we put into our body and how it affects our brand and overall wellness. Dr. Emeran Mayer explains “Whatever goes on in the emotional parts of our brain is mirrored in the gut, and whatever goes on in our gut influences our brain,”
Sometimes you might find yourself questioning why your skin isn’t cooperating when you have been so consistent with your skincare. But you haven’t realised whilst you’re taking care of the exterior, what you put in your body also affects your exterior (of course besides the hormonal breakouts). This can cause unnecessary stress and may even make it worse, having a impact on your wellness.
According to Mayer, the gut is not the second brain but it is actually the first. thus it would be wise to take it serious.
The Brain and Gut Connection
The gut communicates with the brain through different ways, these include:
- The immune system: through circulating cytokines and other inflammatory signals.
- The endocrine system: comprising hormones produced in the gut, including the satiety hormones that make us feel full after a meal.
- The nervous system: nutritionist Rebecca Pilkington. says “Your gut and brain are connected by the vagus nerve, one of the biggest nerves in the body.” This means that your brain, hormones and guts are all linked to stress and anxiety. An example is when you feel butterflies in your stomach in certain situations.
This interconnectedness is often referred by scientists as “gut connectome.”
How does this affect our mental wellbeing?
The gut can affect our mental health and wellbeing overall, this can happen when the gut is inflamed. This can make an individual feel fatigued, unwell or even nauseated after consuming high fat meal. An individual may also crave for food when the gut is empty for a long period of time.
However, when you consume healthier and nutritious food it can do the opposite and can decrease any feelings of anxiety and enhance mood.
The happier your stomach is, the happier you’ll feel.
